I have to admit I haven’t been paying much attention to many of the collections at Paris fashion week but when I saw Givenchy Haute Couture A/W 2010 show I just had to rant about it. Riccardo Tisci’s presentation of the collection can only be described as stunning. Inspiration for the collection was taken from the Mexican holiday ‘Día de los Muertos’(day of the dead) which can be seen in the almost skeletal lace and crystal tracings sewn tightly onto duchesse satin resulting in a what looks almost like a delicate and bewitching x-ray. Highlights of this small but tightly edited collection have to be sheer gowns barely covering any modestly with Chantilly lace stitched into the shape of a pelvis and elegant fringing on jackets and dresses which bear resemblance to the famous Maison Martin Margiela jackets just much more refined, the hair like fringing detail sort of reinforces the theme of ‘day of the dead’ as it adds a almost corpse like component to the collection. Inspiration taken from the life and work of Frida Kahlo was also something that was seen through the show for example; hard, structured luxurious gold gowns held together by spike studded belts had earmarks of the brace Kahlo had to wear due to her crippling back pain. The extravagantly embellished assembly of dresses and jackets left me in complete awe of a label I didn’t care for very much prior to this collection.
